SIP - Structural Insulated Panel Diagram

SIP panels are the building material for the  21st Century

Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are a high performance building system for residential and light commercial construction. The panels consist of an insulating foam core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB).  SIPs are manufactured under factory controlled conditions and can be fabricated to fit nearly any building design. The result is a building system that is extremely strong, energy efficient and cost effective. Building with SIPs will save you time, money and labor.

Building with SIPs generally costs about the same as building with wood frame construction when you factor in the labor savings resulting from shorter construction time and less jobsite waste.  Other savings are realized because smaller heating and cooling systems are required with SIP construction.

General Information

You can choose from several options and services for your project:

  1. We provide detailed set up instructions and video for your project shipped to your driveway.
  2. Add installation services to assemble and connect your project on your prepared site.
  3. We work with you and your contractor to create your project plans, engineering, to get your permits.
  4. We help you locate a contractor and help manage your plans, permits, and plan your site preparation.

We can work directly with your local planning agency to supply structural data and manufacturing inspection certifications on permitted projects. The costs will be negotiated in your contract.

Geocomb Homes can have adjustable legs, or rest on simple pier blocks for an unpermitted or temporary installation. For more permanent use in ADU or larger residence installations it is secured with a hexagonal beam grid bolted onto individual "point-load" footings at each corner. It can also be placed on an existing slab or deck using bolt-down floor components instead of the self supporting floor platforms. Adjustable leveling hardware at each corner make setting it up even easier. We provide along with the plans a template set your builder can use for accurately locating the foundation bolts. You and your contractor are responsible for making sure the site plans and permits, and the site preparation and foundation work are done according to your local codes and conditions.

Assembly Detail

The platform is assembled as sections that lock together to form the floor of each unit. A 2nd floor partial platform with an opening for a ladder can be placed on top of the walls to build a loft-style second level. The roof panels fit snugly on the wall and get connected to the platform making the walls lock into place. Set up or take down takes between 1 and 4 hours per unit depending on the configuration and your experience. We offer installation service on request.

The simple style for a single cell unit roof is divided into 6 triangle panels. It makes either a 14" "crown" opening at the top for uses like ventilation, a light tube, or a stove pipe, or you can use thestyle with a 3 inch opening for a plumbing vent. Each section can be solid, or have a skylight, Solar PV sections. Additions include eaves and rain catchment.

During assembly, each part is automatically interlocked and secured so that the finished structure is highly stable and resistant to wind and weather. It is well insulated at up to R26. Each unit can be instantly connected to other units to expand and diversify your installation. Changing the configuration of the components is fairly simple and quick. This makes them removable, reusable, and replaceable as parts.

When you are ready to Order you will recieve more detailed drawings and the set up demonstration video. Before placing an order you can also take a tour of the showroom model.

Why Is It a Hexagon?

Why Is It a Hexagon?

What's so special about honeycomb?

“There is one masterpiece, the hexagonal cell, that touches perfection. No living creature, not even human, has achieved, in the centre of one's sphere, what the bee has achieved on her own: and if intelligence from another world were to descend and ask of the earth the most perfect creation, I would offer the humble comb of honey.”
~ Maurice Maeterlinck, The Life Of The Bee, 1924
